Walking Information

Generally easy countryside walking with gentle ups and downs over longer distances, allowing extra time for sightseeing and regular breaks.

We use a mix of privately hired vehicles, taxis, and public transport which gives us some flexibility in our itinerary.

All distances, height gains and timings can be found in the Tour Intinerary tab and are approximations.

Day 1

After our morning departures, we travel to Great Malvern and settle into our hotel. This evening, you'll be welcomed by your tour leader before meeting your fellow walking companions over dinner and looking ahead to the days to come.

Day 2

We begin with a Blue Badge Guide meeting us at the hotel for a guided walk around Great Malvern. A highlight is the impressive Priory Church, which dates back to 1085 and was famously saved during the Reformation when local people bought it from Henry VIII for £20. After lunch, we stretch our legs with a walk into the Malvern Hills, where far-reaching views open out across the Heart of England. Our circular route takes in North Hill before sweeping beneath Worcestershire Beacon, the highest point of the Malvern Hills at 425 metres (paths are generally good underfoot). Malvern is also home to Morgan cars, and those interested may wish to pre-book a tour of the factory independently (entrance not included) (2 hours/3.5 miles total walking, 280 metres total ascent/descent).

Day 3

This morning, we take the short train journey into Worcester, where our Blue Badge Guide leads a walking tour of this attractive and historic city. The centrepiece is Worcester Cathedral, set at the heart of the city (donation to the cathedral included). After lunch, there is time to explore further, perhaps visiting the excellent Museum of Royal Worcester or other city sights. In the afternoon, we plan to walk along the River Severn to Diglis Basin, known for its impressive riverside setting, before crossing the river and returning via Worcestershire County Cricket Ground. If river levels make this unsuitable, we will instead follow the Worcester and Birmingham Canal. Another notable landmark on the route is The Commandery, once Royalist headquarters during the Battle of Worcester (2 hours/3.5 miles total walking, 25 metres total ascent/descent).

B, D

Day 4

Today is dedicated to exploring the local countryside on foot. We begin with a short stroll to Malvern railway station, then take the train west to Colwall, the next station along the line. From here, we follow a classic walking route heading generally north back towards Great Malvern. The Malvern Hills provide superb views throughout the day, especially from Worcestershire Beacon, the high point of the walk. Our route allows us to return directly to the hotel on foot (4 hours/5.5 miles total walking, 300 metres total ascent/descent).

B, D

Day 5

After breakfast, we begin our journey home.

Your Leader

Your tour leader plays a crucial role in enhancing your holiday experience, and they share your passion for exploring the world on foot. In addition to being resourceful and organized they are also well-travelled and deeply enthusiastic about showing you new destinations. Your tour leader takes care of all the local, ensuring you can fully enjoy your holiday without worrying about the logistics. While leading group holidays, they always keep in mind that each group is composed of individuals. Each tour leader brings their unique style, talents, and professional background to the table. Rest assured, they are all trained, qualified, experienced, and dedicated to making your holiday as enjoyable, interesting, and inspiring as possible. Remember, your leader, while on holiday, is your first port of call for any issues, ensuring a smooth and worry-free experience for you.

We trust our tour leaders to use the itinerary as a foundation, adapting as needed based on factors like weather and group dynamics. Leaders may choose from additional options as well.

Leaders Evening Briefing

Each evening, your tour leader will meet with you to review the programme for the next day. This is your chance to discuss details and ensure that the planned activities align with your walking ability. If you have any concerns about clothing or equipment, feel free to bring them up during this discussion. If, for any reason, you prefer not to participate in the organised group programme, please inform your leader. Your preferences are important, and your leader is there to make sure your experience aligns with your expectations.

Group Size

We believe that the best things come in small packages, and our Walk Away holidays prove just that. We limit our groups to a maximum of 18 persons, plus the group leader, so that everyone has the opportunity to mix, share their love of travel and return home with new friendships. Small groups also have less detrimental local impact, allows us to use public transport on some days, eat at small local restaurants and, we believe, offers a better experience.
